I was not aware that Scott McCloud was on TED.  Awesome talk, but I wish he’d included some of his own digital comics.  It seems like they’d be more effective at showing the possibilities of infinite canvas.

Scott McCloud on comics

This.  Zot in the rain.

SO MUCH

Somedays, I feel as if I’m the only person who’s ever read Zot. ;w;

I know exactly how you feel! Where I live, I don’t have anyone to fangirl over the comic with. Zot deserves more fans.  A whole lot more 🙂

This.  Zot in the rain.

It came as a surprise to find this gem of a comic book while browsing through the second-hand shops in Cubao Expo (anyone who happens to pass by should stop by Cubao X, so much to see and discover).  Several issues of Zot! by Scott McCloud were lying in a pile of old comic books (a lot of which were published before I was born), just lying there waiting for me to pick them up like it was fate or something.  Bless the good soul who kept them in good condition inside plastic and was willing to sell them for dirt cheap.

I can’t say enough about how well Zot! is written.  I am in awe of what a good storyteller this Scott McCloud is.  I read the first few pages of issue 29 and I fell in love.  Yes, it’s a superhero comic, but it’s not just your run-of-the-mill superhero comic (and no, I am not a big superhero reader, just a few mangas and random graphic novels here and there).  Zot is not only a hero who will save you from the bad guys, he’ll also save you from yourself.  At least, that’s what I think so anyway.  I haven’t read the whole series, but so far, it has touched on racism and homophobia in a very intelligent and sensitive way.  The characters are easy to relate to and are ones that you end up caring about.

I actually went back to Cubao just to buy the rest of the issues available.  So far I only have 5 issues, and I doubt that I’ll find any of the other issues here in the Philippines.  All I can do for now is to drool over the comic’s compilation on Amazon.  I wish I had a big wad of cash in my hand right now.

Okay, crazy raving fangirl will sign off now.
